The Rising Threat of Nihilistic Violent Extremism: Protecting Our Communities and K-12 Youth
St. Clair ROEThis FREE session will be presented by FBI Special Agent Jake Griffin out of the Springfield, Illinois Field Office. Mr. Griffin will describe the global threat of “Nihilistic Violent Extremism” (“NVE”) and the impact it has had in the United States, to include the central and southern Illinois area. NVE groups focus recruitment efforts on children and teenagers through online platforms, using certain recruitment methods to introduce them to their ideology with a focus on radicalizing and eventually mobilizing them to violence. The presentation will provide an overview on the history of NVE ideology, current NVE groups, their recruitment methods, and how to identify those who may be in these groups. The presentation will also discuss miscellaneous information that both sworn and non-sworn individuals need to know about investigations into these groups and how they can assist in addition to an overview of the social media applications these groups use and what to look for on a child or teenagers phone and social media profile in relation to these groups.
