A work permit can be obtained for children aged under 16 thru the St. Clair County Regional Office of Education.  An appointment must be scheduled.  For more information and/or to schedule an appointment, please contact Jayme Abbott at 618-825-3944.  Both the child and the parent/guardian must be present and bring the following items:

  1. Letter of Intent of Employment (Job must be pending)
  2. Copy of Birth Certificate
  3. Copy of Social Security Card
  4. Copy of Physical (given within last year)
  5. Letter from Principal (indicating they are aware student has a job)
  6. Letter of Consent from Parent with Signature
  7. Copy of Parent/Guardian Driver’s License

***Please note that work permits are not permitted for employment at ANY establishment that sells alcoholic beverages.***

 

Child Actor/Talent/Model

In 2020, a law passed that all children under 16 years of age represented by a licensed and bonded talent agency are mandated to open a Coogan Trust Account in order to obtain a work permit.  The laws mandate a trust account for working child performers 16 years and under set aside 15% of the child actor’s gross income.  Along with all the items listed above, this trust must be open to obtain the work permit.

To open a Coogan Trust Account, you typically need to bring:

  1. Social Security Card
  2. Birth Certificate
  3. Proof of Identity
  4. Best financial institution to contact is Actors Federal Credit Union.  No local banks will open a Coogan Trust Account.
  5. Proof of this account being open must be presented.
