County Institute: Enhancing K-12 Physical Education: Current Trends, Fitness Testing, and Data-Driven Approaches

Location: Mascoutah # 19  - Wingate Elementary School, 150 Wingate Blvd. Belleville. This day is structured into four mini-sessions to ensure all PK-12 physical educators will leave with a wealth of information, strategies and resources to return back to your buildings and best support your programs and students. Session 1: Current Trends and Future Possibilities in PE Implications for Fitness, Health, and Wellbeing - This presentation will cover current efforts, expectations and activities associated with physical education. An educational approach connecting the physical to the physiological aspects of movement along with discussion of examples and options as to how we can easily provide a broader well-being perspective in PE. Session 2: Enhanced PE: What it means and why it’s important. Recent legislative efforts in Illinois recommend that schools deliver a health-related fitness approach in PE. This session will provide options and approaches to meet a health-related fitness approach in PE. Session 3: Fitness Testing: Is it Even Useful Anymore?  - This year re-establishes the Illinois fitness testing legislative data submission requirement with fitness testing data being submitted to the Illinois State Board of Education. While fitness testing is a routine part of PE programs, test administration, protocols, and results are often considered to suspect. Learn how to get more out of this process and make it meaningful. Session 4: The Relevance and Data Analysis of Fitness Testing While physical fitness tests are an important assessment component in PE, little is done with the data obtained from those assessments. There is a wealth of information that can be obtained from those fitness testing. Learn how to manage fitness data and the health-related applications of physical fitness assessments. This free session will be held at Pontiac Jr. High School 400 Ashland Dr. Fairview Heights, IL 62208. Join Leah Gregory, Membership Coordinator Schools Liaison for Association of Illinois School Library Educators Illinois and will be split into two parts. First we will explore using data for collection development and advocacy in the library setting. We'll talk about data sources, ways to crunch that data, and ways to make data-driven decisions about your school library collection, including planning, acquisitions, and weeding. Then we'll shift gears to continue to use data to tell a data story. We'll cover what data you need, how to use various tools like Excel, Canva, LibraryAware, and more to visualize your data and put it in a data story form, and then why and where to use this information. The second part of the day will be spent on intellectual freedom and book bans and challenges. We'll discuss how to prevent book bans and challenges, what to do if you experience one, and the new state book-banning law and how to make sure your school district is in compliance. Feel free to bring any of the following reports: shelf lists, circulation reports, hold reports, visit data, and anything else you are wondering how to use. AA # 1451 Teacher Evaluator Competency Skill Building for Teacher Evaluators

This course, presented by Mr. Rich Bickel, focuses on Domains 1 and 4 of the Danielson 2013 Framework and is intended for those administrators who have successfully completed Initial Teacher Evaluation required by ISBE. Administrators who evaluate teachers must demonstrate a high rate of inter-rater reliability and communicate evaluation outcomes in construction and supportive ways. They must also recognize and control for bias when conducting evaluations and determining results. Participants will record data from a pre-conference, align data to the Danielson Framework (Domain 1), collaboratively determine ratings, observe post-conferences, evaluate teacher evidence, and align to the Danielson Framework (Domain 4). Emphasis is placed on meaningful pre- and post-conferences with teachers that ultimately results in improved instruction and practices.Participants will also be expected to demonstrate a high degree of inter-rater reliability when they determine a final rating based on the evidence gathered for Domains 1 and 4. Particiapants should bring a fully charged device to this event. All applications/disseminations must be completed and submitted prior to departure on October 29. Building on the work of the 30 Second Feedback Protocol, join Dr. Julie Sperry, Character Plus and other instructional leaders as we dive into the 5 Minute Instructional Feedback Tool based on the work of Mike Rutherford. 
This protocol is a brief feedback conversation that identifies a specific teaching practice, links the practice to a principle of learning, describes the effect on learning and learners, and engages the teacher in a short dialog going deeper into the practice and affirming the feedback.  We will spend some time reviewing the base 30 Second Feedback Protocol before adding on this next phase of instructional asset building.  
This session is for any instructional leader who observes and provides feedback to teaching staff.  It is not necessary to have attended the first session; all are welcome!
