Every behavior, whether wanted or unwanted, positive or negative, is communicating something. All behaviors are communication, including our own. What is your student trying to communicate to you? At this age, students do not have fully developed executive functioning skills of inhibition, impulse control, working memory, social emotional skills or inattention. Their behaviors are the brain’s way of trying to regulate what is happening within them as well as what is happening around and to them. Our behavior, in response to a child’s behavior, can make the situation better or worse, for both of us. This workshop will teach you how to recognize your own communication as well as those around you. Participants will learn ways to improve their mental health and make the classroom environment a place where every student and adult feels welcome and safe which will in turn create more wanted behaviors from your students.
