Youth Mental Health First Aid

Free for all - lunch will be provided on site Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8 hour public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early interven tion, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care. WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN? The course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorder. Participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan: • Assess for risk of suicide or harm • Listen nonjudgmentally • Give reassurance and information • Encourage appropriate professional help • Encourage self-help and other support strategies WHO SHOULD TAKE THE COURSE? The course is designed for adults who regularly interact with adolescents (teachers, school staff, coaches, youth group leaders, parents, parole officers, etc.).

K-12 Instructional Coach Symposium

Join your fellow instructional coaches at our last symposium of the 2023-2024 school year! Our morning will involve sessions facilitated by your OWN colleagues! First, Vickie Schultz ELA Instructional Facilitator from East St. Louis District # 189 will share various differentiation and cross curricular learning centers strategies.
Differentiation:  This session will focus on differentiated instruction across four main areas: content, process, product, and environment.  Working in groups, participants will get hands-on with classroom materials to explore each area of differentiation and how they work.
Cross-Curricular Learning Centers:  Groups will work on activities for literacy-based small-group learning centers that incorporate Social Science and Science content.
Then Mascoutah # 19 Instructional Coaches Erica Larsen and Jewels Caliper will share a session on Coaching Collaboratively to Build Relationships: In this presentation we will explore the guiding principles of instructional coaching, as we delve into the crucial aspect of building effective relationships with staff. We explore the fundamental understanding that successful coaching is grounded in trust, communication, and empathy. By emphasizing active listening, fostering open dialogue, and acknowledging individual strengths, participants will gain insights into cultivating a supportive coaching environment that promotes professional growth and collaboration. The presentation highlights practical strategies to strengthen these relationships, ultimately enhancing the overall impact of instructional coaching on the development of educators. This will be followed up by a roundtable format with resource sharing, collaborating and networking as we prepare to wrap up this school year.
