JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF BANDS

SUMMARY:
The Assistant Director of Bands assists the Director of Bands with the following:
• Directing and managing the overall band program at O’Fallon Township High School.
• Providing students with an opportunity to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular band activities.
• Planning activities to achieve district, state, and national recognition for the band program as a byproduct of great teaching.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Valid Illinois Teaching License
• Minimum of one (1) year teaching experience
• Extensive conducting experience is preferred.
• Demonstrates expertise in knowledge and teaching instrumental music.
• Must be able to demonstrate and perform well on his/her respective primary instrument.
• Must be an accomplished rehearsal technician in all areas of instrumental band music (concert, jazz, marching, etc.)
DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Directs high school instrumental performances including concert bands and jazz bands.
• Works with the entire team of band directors and band staff as assigned for concert band, jazz band, marching band, performing arts talent show, color guard, winter guard, chamber groups, etc.
• Works with the director team to provide band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, festivals/contests, field trips, and community events.
• Understands that the OTHS Band Program is a “total” program that includes opportunities for students to achieve excellence in concert band, jazz band, marching band, chamber groups, color guard, winter guard, etc.
• Works with the middle school band directors to maintain a comprehensive instrumental curriculum and vertical alignment from grades 6-12. Assists with joint events between the schools, promoting positive learning and togetherness between all O’Fallon Band programs.
• Assists with the organization and implementation of local, regional, and national/international band trips in accordance with district policy and regulations as well as student interest and ability.
• Assists with support of Band Booster Club activities. Works to establish a positive rapport with band parents using effective communication skills, including attending and contributing to Band Booster meetings.
• Assists with auditions for concert bands and jazz bands.
• Assists with band division scheduling and building the band calendar to include all concert bands, jazz bands, marching band, color guard and winter guard rehearsals and performances.
• Works with the director team to organize students and to prepare required documents for district, state, and national festivals and competitions.
• Works with the director team to maintain an accurate inventory/storage of school-owned instruments.
• Develops and implements lesson plans for the instrumental music curriculum and shows written evidence of preparation as required.
• Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
• Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
• Engages in ongoing professional development.
• Other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrative staff.

• Ability to write reports and correspondence consistent with the duties of the position.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions, inquiries, and/or complaints.
• Displays courtesy, tact, and respect when dealing with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and community members.

• Ability to learn and utilize office equipment, computers, and software especially as systems are upgraded.

• Ability to react well under pressure, manage and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions, and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism.
• Extensive knowledge of and ability to perform duties in full compliance with all district, Board of Education, state and federal laws, methods, requirements, policies, procedures, and activities pertinent to the duties of this position.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Supervise students involved in assigned activities and in the classroom, and volunteers.
REGULAR WORK HOURS/TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
The demands of an extended workday (games, events, etc.) require a level of mental and physical endurance.
Compensation for Teaching Positions are based on Appendix “A” of the Agreement between the Board of Education, O’Fallon Township High School District No. 203 and the O’Fallon Federation of Teachers, O’Fallon, Illinois 62269 (Collective Bargaining Agreement). This position is eligible for health/dental/vision/life insurance, paid-time off, and tuition assistance. This position participates in the Teachers Retirement System (TRS).
