Formative Assessment Protocols that Improve Learning and Instructional Driven Decisions (K-8)

This free virtual session is being provided by the IL SLDS Project. Targeted audience: Administrators, Coaches, RTI Coordinators, Related Support Personnel
This session will examine formative assessments and detail multiple ways in which formative assessments that can help guide instruction. Participants will learn about various types of formative assessments such as pre-tests, exit slips, informal assessments, oral interviews and more. Session facilitators will show specific protocols for what the assessments should and could be helping to determine. Participants will also learn best practices when using assessments (daily, weekly, monthly) and how to seamlessly implement the assessment within lessons. Templates will be provided on how to best analyze the various formative assessments.

IMSE’s Morphology+ Refresher (Virtual)
Participants who have completed IMSE's Morphology+ Course will have an opportunity to review key components of a Morphology lesson plan in this follow up virtual coaching session. Topics covered will include: Assessment, Implementation (Three-Part Drill, Teaching a New Concept), and Language Comprehension to ensure components are implemented with fidelity. The session will start off with a Q and A of what is working well as well as the opportunity to discuss concerns. This professional development course equips you with tools to build a collaborative and empowering learning community, leading to improved outcomes for everyone involved. During the session, you will gain a foundation to building consistency, connection, and community for a solid school culture to lead directly to instructional outcomes that you can immediately take back to your building.

Creative Lesson Planning to Inspire Student Engagement in K-12 Art: The Visual Journal

Join Debi West in this free hands-on PD for art educators as she shares tried and true creative lesson ideas that are sure to inspire student engagement in the art classroom. When students have the opportunity to explore a variety of media and add in creative prompts, their visual storytelling - aka ART - goes to the NEXT level! The visual journal is the perfect way to get this started as student's use this teaching and learning tool to reflect on their art practice, pulling in social and emotional learning through their personal mark making. Participants will be grouped into grade level clusters and also share visual journaling ideas, choice-based learning tactics and create art individually and collaboratively! Suicide Risk Assessment in Schools
Conducting a thorough suicide risk assessment for students is an essential skill for school mental health professionals. Topics in this presentation include the step-by-step how-to’s of high-quality suicide risk assessment in the school setting, the pros and cons of specific suicide risk assessment forms, steps to take with low-risk and high-risk students, and use of the Emergency Notification Form. There will be time for questions and discussion.
Postvention: What to Do after a Student’s Suicide
After a suicide, the most important goal is the prevention of suicide contagion. Topics in this presentation include the step-by-step process to use after a student’s suicide, steps for making death announcements to students and the school community, tips on support/counseling rooms, and handling memorials and the student’s desk, locker, and parking space. Time for questions and discussion.

“A Self-Inventory for Physical Education Educators: Wellness as a Foundation of Your Profession” uses current research
to explore the purpose and necessity of placing wellness as a foundational component into the personal and
professional lives of each educator. This session/workshop explores the impact of educator wellness on
professional practice and student learning outcomes, identifies actionable practices for participants to
self-reflect on their current realities and individual needs, and shares practical routines directly related to the
dimensions of physical, mental, emotional, and social wellness.
Speaker Overview
Dan Phelps serves as the principal of Winnebago Middle School in Winnebago, IL. He brings a wealth of
experience to his role, having served as a health education and physical education teacher, where he taught
personal training and strength and conditioning. He has also worked as an assistant principal and federal grant
coordinator. Throughout his career, Dan has been deeply involved in promoting health and wellness within
schools and districts, partnering with them to make it a central focus of the educational process.
In his current position as principal, Dan is actively involved in implementing initiatives such as the PLC at
Work® process and the RTI at WorkTM process. Additionally, he is working on establishing a comprehensive
educator wellness framework for his school. Dan holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education teacher
education and a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Illinois State University. He furthered his
education by earning a master’s degree in educational administration from Northern Illinois University, and he
is currently pursuing his doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies at the same institution, focusing
his research on educator wellness and collective teacher efficacy.

Kerengende Foundation is an Authorized Facilitator for Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children ® training. Stewards of Children ® is an evidence-informed, award-winning two-hour training that teaches adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse . Through interviews with child sexual abuse survivors, experts, and treatment providers, Stewards of Children ® teaches adults practical actions they can take to reduce instances of child sexual abuse in their organizations, families, and communities.
Stewards of Children ® is approved nationally for two hours of continuing education for nurses.
