The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Academy is a non-public school providing education to children grades Kindergarten – 4th Grade. We are looking for co-teachers to join the team.

A Jackie Joyner-Kersee Academy Co-teacher is passionate about working with youth. They collaborate with the Academy Principal, Lead teacher, other staff members and parents to ensure the students receive the best education we can provide. Staff and administration are committed to building something extraordinary. Our goal is to close the achievement gap by making the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Academy a dynamic learning environment where every child is genuinely embraced and uplifted.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students, challenging each to do his/her best work. Provide evidence of preparation upon request by the Academy Principal.
  • Work with the lead teacher to monitor the students and the class schedule.
  • Assist with lesson preparation by getting materials ready and setting up equipment.
  • Revise lesson material with students individually or in small groups as directed by the teacher.
  • Responsible for students during non-classroom times including between classes, during meal time, recess, and on field trips. This may be with or without the lead teacher’s assistance.
  • Plan broadly using semester and quarterly plans and objectives and using a Lesson Plan Book.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional aids, methods, and materials that will provide creative teaching to reach the whole child’s spiritual, mental, physical, social, and emotional needs.
  • Collaborate with the lead teacher to recognize issues students are facing and recommend solutions.
  • Provide instruction in a variety of methods to meet the learning styles of all students. This includes teaching and modeling Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s Winning In Life principles, Biblical principles and the Christian philosophy of education.
  • Keep proper discipline in the classroom/school premises providing an excellent learning environment.
  • Maintain a clean, well-organized classroom.
  • Maintain regular and accurate attendance and grade records to meet the demands for a comprehensive knowledge of each student’s progress.
  • Keep students, teachers, parents, and administration adequately informed of progress or deficiencies.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with students, parents, and staff by treating others with friendliness, dignity, and consideration.
  • Attend and participate in in-services, retreats, committee, facility, and parent meetings.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

* May be required to attend meetings and/or assist with events outside of regular school hours.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Associates degree with an emphasis in education or early childhood education preferred.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • 2 years or more experience in a school setting or working with youth required.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfortable using a variety of instructional devices such as promethean board.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Extremely effective administration of multifaced operations.
  • Thorough understanding of educational laws, regulations, policies and requirements.
  • Knowledge of best practices in education.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Periodic sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Extended periods of time on your feet.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Required to stand, sit, and reach, and must be able to move around the work environment.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Must be able to coordinate a variety of large and small tasks simultaneously and handle tension and stress in a positive manner.
