Objective/Purpose:  The job of Maintenance Worker is done for the purpose/s of (a) maintaining operational and safe facilities for students, staff and public, (b) providing manual skill in the inspection, servicing, and repair of the buildings, equipment, and furnishings, (c) performing a wide variety of building trade tasks in the construction, alteration, maintenance and repair of District buildings, furnishing, equipment, etc. and (d) minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure.

 

Training, Education, & Qualifications:

 

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to complete on-line computerized training
  • Must have a record free of criminal violations that would prohibit public school employment
  • Must be able understand and follow multi-step oral and written instructions
  • Must be able to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios
  • Must be able to comply with environmental, health, and safety laws/regulations, building codes, and ADA accessibility guidelines and must be able to use blueprints/schematic diagrams.
  • Must have familiarity in maintenance/repair procedures (e.g., mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, roofing etc.)
  • Must be able to operate hand tools and power tools commonly used in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry work.
  • Must have familiarity with building systems (e.g., HVAC, fire suppression, security, communication,
    etc.)
  • Must be able to read and interpret manuals, specifications, product labels, etc.
  • Must be able to read, understand, and comply with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of
    the work.

Physical Demands:   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Mental Demands:   While performing the duties of this classification, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with constant interruptions; and interact with District staff, other organizations and the public. The employee is occasionally required to deal with dissatisfied or quarrelsome individuals.

Essential Responsibilities:  Maintenance Workers are expected to assume the role of maintainer of facilities, fixtures, and equipment, and other District property, similar to the manner in which he/she would for their own personal residence and property.  Maintenance workers are expected to perform a variety of skilled journey-level tasks. The omission of any specific duty does not exclude the duties from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the Maintenance classification.

  • Perform basic plumbing, electrical and HVAC maintenance.
  • Maintain facilities, vehicles, and equipment as directed.
  • Drive vehicles and equipment as directed.
  • Find and repair roof leaks
  • Repair structures, windows, doors, equipment, and furnishings.
  • Responsible for safe condition of flooring, door frames, doors, window frames, staircases, stair treads, walls, ceilings, hardware and other like structural elements of District facilities.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance activities (e.g., lubricates moving parts, replaces filters, cleans equipment, adjusts/replaces belts, changes oil, prepares items for storage, etc.).
  • Respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
  • Picks-up and deliver equipment, materials, and other supplies as directed.
  • Alter, repair or construct articles and structures of wood and/or other materials (such as room additions, partitions, walls, benches, tables, counters, etc.); repair and maintain doors, windows and sashes; operate power saws, joiner and other woodworking machinery; replace window glass.
  • Perform basic locksmith duties.
  • Maintain and repair door, window, locker, and furniture hardware.
  • Perform cement, plaster or brick work.
  • Install and repair kitchen equipment to include dishwashers, gas and electric appliances, exhaust hoods, and serving line equipment.
  • Install and repair carpet tiles, linoleum, vinyl and ceramic tiles.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications and manuals; estimates and requisitions materials and supplies for assigned projects. Maintains as-builts on all building and facilities changes.
  • Anticipate and replenish consumable supplies to avoid work schedule interruptions. Helps with the receipt of deliveries. Inspects packages. Verifies quantities.
  • Comply with safety and environmental regulations. Ensure that supplies are labeled and stored safely.
  • Clean, move, and arrange furnishings, supplies, and equipment as directed.
  • Perform repairs. Avoid disrupting building activities except during emergencies. Consult with the Director of Facilities to schedule major repairs and ensure compliance with building codes and ADA accessibility standards.
  • Anticipate and prepare for fire, health, and safety inspections.
  • Monitor safety equipment (e.g., electrical, lighting, alarm systems, etc.) as directed.
  • Maintain clear routes for emergency egress.
  • Take appropriate action to protect district property.
  • Ensure that assigned buildings and job sites are secured at the end of the day.
  • Help uphold security procedures.
  • Attend in service training and complete online training (e.g. blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, maintenance training, etc.) for the purpose of receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.
  • Deal with unexpected situations (e.g., accidents, equipment failure, etc.). Follow approved safety procedures to clean up injuries involving chemicals, solvents, blood, body fluids and/or body tissues.
  • Monitor, regulate, and inspect HVAC equipment as directed. Helps prepare boilers and other equipment for annual inspections, maintenance activities, and/or shutdown.
  • Assist with snow removal operations as directed.
  • Assist Grounds workers, custodians, Security workers, and other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned for the purpose of supporting the educational mission of the school district.


General Responsibilities: 

  • Observe safe work practices, including maintaining storage areas in safe condition.
  • Supervise students in cafeterias, hallways, and emergency situations, and communicate issues to the administration.
  • Review email daily.
  • Report any unauthorized persons and/or security concerns.
  • Keep Director of Facilities and/or the administration informed about ongoing activities/emerging issues.
  • Document all injuries that require treatment.
  • Take the initiative to perform routine responsibilities independently.
  • Assist other staff as needed to deal with unexpected or urgent situations.
  • Monitor facility conditions. Report suspected problems and/or unsafe conditions (e.g., unusual odors, discolorations, noises, leaks, etc.).
  • Comply with safety and environmental regulations. Ensure that supplies are labeled and stored safely.
  • Complete/Participate in occupational safety and health training programs as directed.
  • Complete/Participate in District training programs and initiatives as directed.
  • Be punctual and dependable with all aspects of work duties.
  • Display a positive attitude toward students, employees, and the public.


Work Environment: 
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this classification. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and/or is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee may be required to work in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.  Some positions may be subject to weekend and/or rotating shifts and 24-hour call-out.

Salary:

$17.75 per hour in 2024-2025.
