SUMMARY:County Institute: Autism in Girls: Recognizing and Supporting a Frequently Missed Presentation - For School Social Workers and Student Support Professionals (VIRTUAL)
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Madison Fritsche of West County Psychological Associates will present this virtual session on Autism in Girls. Autism in girls is frequently overlooked or identified later because many girls do not fit the traditional picture of autism. This presentation explores how autism may present differently in girls\, including masking\, internalizing behaviors\, social imitation\, friendship challenges\, less obvious restricted interests\, sensory differences\, and emotional regulation. Participants will learn to look beyond surface-level functioning\, recognize patterns that may otherwise be missed\, and identify practical ways to better support autistic girls within educational settings. Dr. Fritsche is a Ph.D. and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist with extensive experience in public school systems. She specializes in comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations for children and adolescents\, focusing on ADHD\, autism\, learning disabilities\, and behavioral challenges. This session is designed for school social workers and student support staff. Each attendee must log in with their own device. DESCRIPTION:Annually\, all district homeless liaisons are required to attend a refresher training on the McKinney-Vento Act and the duties of the district homeless liaisons.  This training satisfies that compliance requirement.  Topics will include review of the McKinney-Vento Act\, identification and eligibility\, what to look for in existing students\, student rights\, identification of barriers and how to remove those barriers\, school of origin\, transportation\, set-aside funds and allowable costs\, dispute process\, migrant education\, resources\, forms\, and a question/answer period. \nIn addition\, identifying homeless students continues to be a challenge for all of us\, and we know the critical role front office staff plays in this process.  As such\, I invite each of you to bring one member of your front office staff from each building to the training.  Please take advantage of this.

Increase inter-rater reliability in all phases of the evaluation process; 4. Acquire strategies to support effective collaborative conferencing around formal and informal observations; and 5. Learn techniques\, strategies\, and protocols to use when conferencing with staff to promote improvement in instructional practice. Critical issues and practices will be outlined as it pertains to avoiding discrimination and developing Section 504 Plans that are comprehensive and appropriate.\nDr. Sepiol has had a variety of careers in education\, including serving as a special education teacher\, building principal\, assistant director in a special education cooperative\, legal counsel for parents in special education matters\, due process hearing officer\, and legal counsel for school districts throughout the state of Illinois. Dr. Sepiol is a nationally recognized speaker on issues involving special education law\, disability rights\, and student issues. Dr. Sepiol has also served as an adjunct professor in various universities where she has focused her coursework on special education and the law. She earned her education degree and law degree from Loyola University and her doctoral degree in educational leadership from National Louis University. She is a member of the Illinois Bar Association and has served on the Illinois Council of School Attorney’s Committees on Special Education and the No Child Left Behind Act.\n\nRegistration closes October 16\, at 10:00am.

DESCRIPTION:On June 1\, 2021\, substantive changes went into effect in NASW’s Code of Ethics regarding the imperative of self-care. As licensed social workers and mental health professionals\, we have an ethical responsibility to engage in effective self-care\, both professionally and personally. \nThis workshop\, led by Amy Maus\, MSW\, LCSW of West County Psychological Associates\, will review these changes in the Code of Ethics and explore various strategies of self-care that social workers and other helping professionals can utilize for themselves as well as employ with those we serve.  Using the Wheel of Self-Care\, we will discuss effective strategies for physical\, emotional\, social\, spiritual\, and professional self-care.  Participants will be invited to share helpful resources and effective self-care strategies that they use personally and in their own practice settings. \n  \nCEU or pd hours are available. DESCRIPTION:Care teams and problem-solving teams play an important role in identifying and supporting students who are experiencing academic\, behavioral\, or social-emotional difficulties—but without a clear process\, meetings can easily become focused on discussing concerns rather than developing and evaluating solutions. \nDr. Madison Fritsche of West County Psychological Associates will present this interactive session\, where participants will learn a practical\, data-driven framework for making care teams more effective and efficient. We will explore the purpose\, structure\, participants\, and agenda of effective care teams; how to define student concerns using measurable data; and how to conduct root cause analysis to better understand why a student may be struggling.
